While Ryan is our homebody (even more than Mommy), Abby is always the first to want to go do something (even more than Daddy). So she was so very excited to be getting away from home to do a couple fun things last Monday. We took a break from our yard work and headed to Portland. We first stopped at a fantastic children's park, but it started raining almost the minute we got there and was too slippery to play on. Abby slipped and fell twice just in the short time we were there. So we decided to try to find two local geocaches, one designed for a little girl and one for a little boy. We had to get under cover between finding the two because it just started to pour, but we enjoyed the park shelter called The Elephant House that had a neat relief of an elephant and her calf on the wall.
The rain let up and we found our second cache and headed to the zoo. We were pleased to find one of the R2 mailboxes right there at the zoo, so we stopped for a couple of pictures and then went to see the new exhibits they just opened. Our zoo is kind of wimpy (in my humble opinion, even the Memphis zoo was better), but Abigail loves it, so I go for her. Today I was very pleasantly surprised at the new exhibits though. There are black bears and mountain lions and another cat that I can't remember the name of. They did a great job on their habitats and I kind of felt like I was actually out in the woods instead of at the zoo.
The park closed and we headed home, but first we had to pose for pictures with the zoo bears. The kids have been wanting to get their picture taken with these bears the last couple of times we came, but it's usually crowded and takes too long to wait in line. Today there weren't too many people braving the rain, and we got our bear pictures.
