Because Abby was born prematurely, our specialists wanted her to see an ophthalmologist since preemies often have vision problems. So when Abigail was eight months old we took her to her first eye exam. Dr. DeFrank saw nothing to be concerned about but wanted to see her again at three. So we took her back today for another exam. When we saw her specialist last month, Dr. Butcher thought she might have seen some slight crossing of her eyes (oh, no, not this again, we groaned).
Abby was a model patient, as usual, and they didn't even need to dilate her eyes because she sat so still and followed the doctor's requests so well. She has excellent vision and no crossing! She does have psuedostrabismus, or false crossed eyes. Due to her prenatal exposure to alcohol, she has some some small epicanthal folds and an extra wide space between her eyes which is common with FAE children, and this can give the appearance of her eyes crossing. I've never really noticed it, but I'm used to her beautiful face.
Dr. DeFrank wants to see her once more when she's five, but only because it's a good time to check her vision before she starts school (I didn't tell her she'll probably start school before that and that we're homeschooling, but we'l get them examined again then anyway.).
