Saying Goodbye

Abby has been really interested in our caterpillars, chrysalides, and butteflies almost to a fault. I caught her more than once talking to them and then flattening the garden trying to get some response from them! Thankfully, they survived her inordinate amounts of affection, and it's time to say goodbye to them. Abby kept saying she wanted to keep them "forever," but once we explained how unhappy they were in the cage, she seemed eager to set them free. They had been flying around quite a bit and I was concerned if we didn't release them soon they might injure themselves in the small garden.

We waited for Daddy to get home, and then we took the garden outside, unzipped it, and away they flew...all but one, that is. One of them seemed unable to fly, but when Daddy reached in and gave it a helping hand out, he took off and flew away. Hopefully they will lay eggs nearby and start the whole process again. It would be neat to see more Painted Lady butterflies in our yard and know they probably came from ours!
