Scary Morning

I have never seen a child get into so many predicaments and tangles as our Abby seems to. I have always thought this day was coming, and unfortunately today was that day. I had to call Poison Control this morning. Abigail managed to get the "child-proof" cap off of the bottle of fluoride rinse and by the time I discovered it, the bottle was empty. Since we had no idea how much went down the sink and how much she actually consumed, we called Poison Control.

The voice on the other end was just what I needed to hear...confident and very soothing. He told me to immediately give her something with calcium because it would bind the fluoride and keep it from being absorbed into her system. We poured her a glass of milk and made her drink it, and then another glass and a piece of cheese. Then he asked me some questions and put me on hold while he did some calculations.

We quizzed Abby in every way we could think of asking her how much she drank. Her answer was consistent, just one drink. He came back on the line and said that for her weight she would need to drink 20 ounces before we would need to be concerned. The bottle was 16 ounces and about one third of it had been used, so we were relieved to know she couldn't have poisoned herself. He told us to just watch her, particularly if she vomits or complains of a tummyache (a couple glasses of milk and a piece of cheese would give me a tummyache!).

She was perfectly fine the whole day. I was pleased that he called back several hours later to check on her and see how she was doing. I'm so grateful for modern conveniences, like a simple telephone, that can instantly give me the information and help I need! I am also grateful to God for protecting her and providing what seems to be a host of angels to watch after our little darling.

Oh my gosh! I'm glad to hear she's okay.

I bet I know what you're doing today...double Abby proofing cupboards, huh?

Hugs to You!

I'm not sure that's possible aside from putting stuff into a safe! LOL. I thought they were pretty safe. I just didn't think much about fluoride being poison until she actually drank it! It doesn't seem to matter how I try to keep things away from her, she still finds a way if I'm not watching her constantly (which I usually try to do...she is my little shadow all day long!). She can open a child-proof cupboard, climb up on anything to reach something, etc.

Kim...how SCARY!!! Julia did something similar a few weeks ago...she got a tube of toothpaste open (flip-top lid) and when I found her she had toothpaste everywhere. Poison control was very good to us as well, told us exactly the same thing about the calciun, etc. BUT the brand of toothpaste was Colgate whitening, and they told me that 2 tsp. could put her into...CARDIAC ARREST!!! (She weighs 29 pounds) Talk about being terrified!

I threw away the toothpaste and bought Tom's of Maine without flouride. Even though we normally keep the toothpaste where Julia can't get it, we are human and there are lapses...it isn't worth the risk!

I feel for you, mama...been there and done that! Thank GOD for His hand of protection!
