Our Little Tornado

Abby has been quite a handful the last couple of days. I don't know if it's because I am distracted by packing and not giving her enough attention (or watching her closely enough) or if she's stressed with all the moving activity, or if she needs more sensory input or what. It's probably all of the above.

Yesterday she poured her milk into her yogurt during breakfast, got into some of my hair conditioner and squirted it all over Ryan and the bathroom floor, ripped a sticker off of Ryan's new excavator (I was able to fix it), tore her PBJ into bits and dropped it on the floor beside her highchair (conveniently on the side where I didn't see it until I went to wash her up), emptied half a box of Kleenex into our small fish bowl (it smothered one of the two fish), and she took two bites out of the drawer insert that slides under the bed (yes, it's made of wood!). The last two she did while we thought she was sleeping, and we didn't discover it until we went to check on them before going to bed for the night.

As far as I can tell, none of these things was done maliciously. She just can't seem to squelch her curiosity and need to touch and feel and explore things. I think I will stick her in her highchair with some Pla-Doh and maybe that will help her tactile senses get what she needs. I know for sure that today she is going to be glued to my side! If it means I don't get everything packed, then so be it. I just can't leave her unattended for one minute.

I've had one of those days too...I find that Julia needs alot of vestibular and proprioceptive input when she's being "destructive". Also I can't let her get bored! A big job, but I have my older kids to help me! Good luck! Your family is in my prayers!

Oh...forgot to mention...do you try joint compressions? That and the Wilbarger skin brushing make a HUGE difference!

Poor Abby. I'm sure between her sensory needs, and the stress of all the boxes everywhere and moving is all just taking a toll on her. I'm sure having Gramie and Grandpa arriving in the coming days will help her.

Beth, I have completely forgotten about joint compressions! Thanks for the reminder. I will definitely do them today! We do the skin brushing too, and I'll try doing more of that today to see if it helps.

Darcy, I am looking forward to my mom and dad being here. At least it's extra eyes and hands to help keep her busy and watched every minute!
